SEO Glossary > Cloaking

Cloaking is a technique whereby a website presents one version of a web page to users and a different version to search engine crawlers. This is considered a disallowed practice by Google and Bing because it is used for deceptive purposes. Websites provide search engines with innocuous content and they would be listed as sources on the search engine, but users would receive porn, gambling or other content when they landed on the web page. All types of cloaking are considered risky even if the intent is not deceptive.
